clad in rags, he wanders on Wall Street he is invisible to hustling stock brokers he is a man with no money, no property a hapless struggler of excessive loan burdens bitter winter winds blow across Broadway he is invisible to affluent theatre-goers wearing warm winter coats he is a man who watches them scurry past the cardboard box that is his bed like a rain-dog, huddling in the shadows of alleys and doorways he hears deafening explosions of New Year fireworks he is invisible to the revellers he is a man who cowers, recalling gunfire of a war he fought echoing through his mind in restless nights the incessant thumping of traumatic stress he is invisible…a victim of post-Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq who once bore a uniform and served his country with pride he is invisible suffering alone, paying the price through severe disabilities and permanent scars with sadness, he watches voters going to the polls he is invisible, a veteran with no voice in elections he is a man who cannot vote without an “address” a placard on a pavement might catch the eye unemployed, homeless, unseen but most of all forgotten he is a man who seems invisible but he is still a man

Thè Làst Soldìèr Whèn thè làst soldìèr pàssès on, Whèn àrmìès àrè dìsbàndèd ànd mìlìtìàs dìschàrgèd, Whèn wèàpons àrè àbàndonèd ànd àrmor dìscàrdèd, Your mìssìon wìll, àt làst, bè ovèr. I lay here today a soldier I know some don’t understand I will try to explain So maybe you can I served my country For many a year I retired long ago The soldier still here I put on my uniform I wore it to foreign lands The soldier I was Is still in the man I have been a husband, father, and friend To some of you here But I’ve been a soldier all along Even after so many a year My final salute I render today I’m still a soldier I’m just on my way

Veterans Day Poems For Church

The Soldier stood and faced God Which must always come to pass He hoped his shoes were shining Just as brightly as his brass. “Step forward now, you Soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?” The Soldier squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t Because those of us who carry guns Can’t always be a saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays And at times my talk was tough, And sometimes I’ve been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny That wasn’t mine to keep… Though I worked a lot of overtime When the bills got just too steep, And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear, And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place Among the people here, They never wanted me around Except to calm their fears. If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, It needn’t be so grand, I never expected or had too much, But if you don’t, I’ll understand.” There was a silence all around the throne Where the saints had often trod As the Soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God, “Step forward now, you Soldier, You’ve borne your burdens well, Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets, You’ve done your time in Hell.”

Veterans Day Thank You Poems

A Hardihood Veteran It’s time to put aside our own concerns and fears Whether about terror attacks Or a nuclear war to end all wars after all these years. We need to honor the men and women who have kept wars from our doorsteps And kept our homeland safe Throughout our history. Yet we have personal war debts to each of them. The wounded warriors whose lives are permanently and forever altered. To all those who made the ultimate sacrifice ending in death When their body failed and faltered With a last breath. Families lost fathers and mothers by the dozens. Sisters and brothers Children and cousins. All leave unfillable holes in The fabric of our lives. The veterans remaining on crutches and in wheelchairs With the stresses of violence witnessed and experienced. Those with pain and confusion reigning in their brains. With their patient loving human and canine companions Seeking peace of mind and only silence. Their families are strangers now The veterans have gone through hell for us Lost buddies and lovers and pals and colleagues and medics through never ending wars. And the cleanup that continues forever after with the memories of dead families and little children peopling their hearts and minds and dreams. Hearing over and over the cries and screams. And all that continues today Five die here, a dozen there, every day on land and sea and in the air Again defending us here at home while they serve “over there.” How in the world do we say thank you for those gifts? Of life and limbs the loss of laughter in a a permanently gray world. Unavailable or unaffordable health care or housing. We need first to understand the gift to appreciate the gift To never forget the gift. When an effort is for veterans just do it. When veterans need something we should meet that need. We owe them Big time. God bless our veterans And give them a blessed life. And thank you everyone here today For loving them, for honoring them, for feeding them, for praying for them and for the country we love. God bless our veterans. God bless us all. And God bless America.
